Mr. Improbable — Genii
Reviewed by Chenoa Baker
Melting red, purple, yellow, and white appear on the screen in shapes that we cannot decipher yet for Genii, which the artist tells me ‘is meant to be the plural of genius.’ Disrupted by static then brought back to clear kaleidoscopic forms, the meditative music paired with the imagery gives the work a psychedelic feeling like the viewer is floating (carried by their rhythmic breath matching the metronomic rhythm of the music). It feels like the imagery is what it would be like to depict the divine or an aura of something. There is the dichotomy of blurry then clear and blurry then clear which launches us to fixate on the middle point where the imagery originates from. The visuals fade out as we, again, focus on the core.
It makes perfect sense that Mr. Improbable has an executive coaching background because this feels like a wordless affirmation visual that leaves you with a warm embrace. A self-proclaimed storyteller, Mr. Improbable is interested in empathy as the core of each narrative. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is a powerful way to unlock understanding. As such, they write “I believe that better ‘story-living’ can serve to improve the overall state of personal and societal well-being.”
