WaveForms held its inaugural multimedia occurennce at Museum of Science, Boston in summer 2023. It offered opportunities to experience a variety of work by artists, technicians, and producers. Programming intentionally overlapped with a robust schedule as well as chances to drift.

Boston Cyberarts — Mugar Omni Theater

Boston Cyberarts curated and produced 21 works of experimental animation and video art from regional + international artists. These were split into two 30-minute, programs screened in the Mugar Omni Theater’s five-story-tall immersive projection theater. These artists were selected through an open call juried by Leonie Bradbury, Ph.D, Georgie Friedman, and Al Miner.

MASARy STUDIOS — Hayden Planetarium

  • Ritual System is an AV performance by MASARY Studios exploring the shape of time, perception of sound, and form. This performance examines traditional and novel ways to consider how sound and light are experienced and how they interact through various perspectives. The event is also the debut of new real-time audio analysis technology the artists have been developing in recent months. Ritual System was performed in the round two times during WaveForms for ~20 minutes per set.

MIT SPATIAL SOUND LAB —Pop-Up Sound LAB

MIT Spatial Sound Lab curated and mixed four spatial sound works to be played back in a pop-up 4.1 channel spatial audio theater. These works screened three times throughout the evening blended with other spatial audio pieces in a ~45 minutes long program; there were opportunities to participate in discussions with the artists and MIT crew throughout the evening.

ILLUMINUS — COMMON Spaces

Illuminus Boston curated and produced three multimedia installations to invite engagement throughout the evening. These were presented in the atrium and open spaces between the planetarium and Omni theaters.

  • Stiggity Stackz & Andrew Hlynsky ft. Jahkai “MOONLITE” Davis, Makeda “Inferna” Wallace Stackin’ Stylez
    An interactive installation informed by freestyle dance concepts translated into animations that respond to visitors' movements. Throughout the event, some of Boston's best freestyle dancers took over the installation and performed alongside the animations they inspired.

    A spatial multifeed video installation set up as a contemporary henge. Display technology and guidance generously provided by Larry Zoll and LED Studio.
