ALL Submissions are due by JUNE 1, 2023 at 11:59 PM EDT
There is no fee to apply.

WaveForms was established to provide resources of space, equipment, production, curation, and mentorship to multimedia practitioners in our region and beyond. On July 13, the Museum of Science will come to life with activations such as: projection-mapped video installations, spatial sounds, and experimental animations & video art. Artists, scientists, and technologists are invited to submit work for consideration in this curated production led by MASARY Studios, Illuminus, Boston Cyberarts, MIT Spatial Sound Lab, and AVFX.

  • Boston CyberArts is selecting short Experimental Animations and Video Art pieces for the Mugar Omni Theater, a five-story tall, 180-degree domed viewing environment. IMAGE 1 | IMAGE 2 | IMAGE 3

We are looking for “art based” pieces to activate this visually immersive location in intriguing ways that take advantage of the optical depth of the space. These could be experimental animations (traditional or digital); sensory-based, experiential works; experimental art narratives; etc. Pieces that relate to themes within Boston’s Museum of Science; eco-futurism; social/environmental justice; or other topics from marginalized communities are encouraged.

A jury of professional Digital Media and Time-Based Artists will select pieces for a 30-minute program. The budget for artist honorariums will be split equally among selected artists and may rage from $300-600 depending on the number of works in the program.

    Cyberarts 2023 WaveForms Jurors:
Leonie Bradbury, Ph.D, curator, Emerson Contemporary, Emerson College, Boston, MA
Georgie Friedman, video installation artist, assistant professor, and Boston Cyberarts, Boston, MA
Al Miner, artist and curator, de la Cruz Gallery, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

  • The MIT Spatial Sound Lab is welcoming proposals for multichannel music and sound artworks for inclusion in our program at WaveForms. Four (4) awardees will be notified by mid-June, and will receive a $500 stipend for their work. Group submissions are allowed.

We encourage submissions from artists already composing in spatial, however, submissions in stereo will be welcomed as well. We, in the Lab, are happy to work with awardees to transform their projects into spatial audio. A willingness to create a spatial audio project, working with us, would be appreciated. It’s fairly simple and, we believe, utterly fascinating.

Initial submissions should include a sample:
    • Maximum of 10 minutes long
    • Maximum of 100 MB
    • If spatial, 4.0 or 4.1 .wav files or 4/5 mono tracks with a note about preferred routing for quadraphonic playback

Awardees will be expected to provide one final pre-recorded piece with the following expectations:
    • 5-8 minute duration
    • Submitted at least one week prior to the event
    • Prepared for 4.0 or 4.1 playback
    • In-person participation on July 13 in a meet-the-artists talkback session to discuss their work

We look forward to working with selected artists to finalize their recorded submissions for WaveForms!

  • This is the form for submitting concepts for site specific projection mapped works in locations throughout the open spaces of the museum. Emerging artists and artists without digital experience are encouraged to apply. The ILLUMINUS team will work with selected artists to develop their concepts into multi-sensory, experiential installations. There is a minimum artist stipend of $500 with additional funds and resources available to support the production of the work.

  • • When will I find out if my work was accepted? June 12.

    Are there residency restrictions? No.

Do I need to apply with finished work? Finished pieces are preferred, but nearly completed works-in-progress, or customizable site-specific pieces, may be submitted for review. If the work shows extreme promise, you’ll be considered as a finalist and contacted for more info.

Can I apply with collaborators? Artist collaborations/collectives are welcome to apply and should submit work via one entry and indicate artists’ names.

    • What if I do not have a Gmail account for the submission forms? You can fill out answers to the questions / share links and send them to the respected track email contact listed on the form.

Can I submit to more than one track? Artists may respond to more than one WaveForms-call, but must submit different content to each.

Artists retain all ownership of their work.

What if I have questions that aren’t answered here or on the track descriptions? Reach out to nelly@masarystudios.com
