WaveForms is a series of multimedia occurrences, with multiple opportunities to experience the work of artists, technicians, and producers from various angles.

The programming intentionally overlaps; so while you may not be able to engage with everything, we hope you will stumble onto many things that are very special, and certainly surprising. Plan ahead. Arrive early.

Boston Cyberarts — Mugar Omni Theater

Boston Cyberarts has curated and produced 21 works of experimental animation and video art from regional + international artists. These have been split into two unique programs prepared for the Mugar Omni Theater’s five-story-tall immersive projection theater.

Everyone is invited to connect with the artists, curators, and producers of this track at the uppermost exit of the theater immediately following each screening.

MASARy STUDIOS — Hayden Planetarium

MASARY Studios has created an AV performance set in the round. It will take place two times during WaveForms and is ~20 minutes long.

  • Ritual System is a live AV performance exploring the shape of time, perception of sound, and form. This performance examines traditional and novel ways to consider how sound and light are experienced and how they interact through various perspectives. The event is also the debut of new real-time audio analysis technology the artists have been developing in recent months.

MIT SPATIAL SOUND LAB —Pop-Up Sound LAB

MIT Spatial Sound Lab has curated and mixed four spatial sound works to be played back in a pop-up 4.1 channel spatial audio theater. These works will be screening three times throughout the evening blended with a mix of other spatial audio pieces. This program is ~45 minutes long and folks are encouraged to drop in any time throughout the evening.

Opportunities to participate in discussions with the artists and the crew from MIT Spatial Sound Lab intermittently throughout the evening.

ILLUMINUS — COMMON Spaces

Illuminus Boston curated and produced three multimedia installations presented in the common spaces. 

These works span the atrium, and the open areas outside the planetarium and Omni theaters, inviting engagement throughout the evening.

  • Stiggity Stackz & Andrew Hlynsky ft. Jahkai “MOONLITE” Davis, Makeda “Inferna” Wallace Stackin’ Stylez
    An interactive installation informed by freestyle dance concepts translated into animations that respond to visitors' movements. Throughout the event, some of Boston's best freestyle dancers will take over the installation and perform alongside the animations they inspired.

    Jim Kalambokis The Loop
    A spatial multifeed video installation set up as a contemporary henge. A circle of inward-facing video screens invites participants to step into a closed but endless space and experience all-surrounding, perspective-shifting live feeds of themselves and others.

    NikuAI Tipping Point.
    Generative AI work exploring the myriad causes and catastrophic effects of climate change. A Jenga tower embodies the intricate web of interdependent variables sustaining our fragile biosphere. NikuAI is: Anna Buchele, Erik Strand, and Serge Vasylechko. Additional Collaborators: Phillip Cherner, Valentina Perosa, Cassandra Lee

NEW IMPRESSIONS — ATRIUM

New Impressions is an upstarting print studio in Somerville. They’ll be running an interactive monoprinting station in the atrium near the Rube Goldberg machine + singing stairs. Come make waves with them!
